Is Onglyza dangerous?
There are a number of serious side effects associated with Onglyza, including the increased risk of heart failure and pancreatitis. Though many people who use this Type 2 diabetes medication will not experience these side effects, the consequences for those that do can be exceedingly serious. Although there are now warnings of these side effects on the drug’s labeling, many patients had already been prescribed this popular medication by physicians who were not provided with the information necessary to properly screen their patients.
Why is there a new warning on Onglyza’s labeling?
In April of 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee convened to discuss and vote on the results of a neutral clinical trial called SAVOR-TIMI 53. The clinical trial was a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial meant to determine the safety of saxagliptin (Onglyza) for people who use the drug to manage their blood-sugar levels. After examining the results of this clinical trial, fourteen of the fifteen members on the FDA’s advisory committee voted to include a warning on Onglyza’s labeling about the increased risk of heart failure associated with the drug. One member of this advisory committee voted to remove the drug from the market altogether.
